Soma Energy emerges from stealth with $7m seed led by Category Ventures to ease data-centre power limits

The Vancouver company, started by former AWS energy engineers, says it is optimising two gigawatts for power producers and works with five data-centre customers.

Soma Energy, a Vancouver company building AI software that helps data centres get more power from existing infrastructure, emerged from stealth in early April 2026 with $7m in combined pre-seed and seed funding, according to Techcouver and BetaKit.

Category Ventures led the seed round. Haystack, RRE Ventures, TO VC and Uncork Capital took part. The pre-seed investors were Panache Ventures and angel investor Walter Kortschak. BetaKit said the seed round closed in the second quarter of 2025 and that Soma did not disclose how much came from each round.

The company is based in Vancouver, British Columbia, according to Techcouver. BetaKit converted the $7m to about C$9.7m.

“The answer is not simply more infrastructure, but better orchestration.”Ath Caramanolis, CEO, Soma Energy

What Soma does

Techcouver described an AI-driven platform that optimises electricity supply and demand in real time. It links distributed energy resources, battery storage and generation assets into one control layer. For data centres, it lets a facility combine on-site generation, storage and demand management so it can act as a flexible grid asset. For power producers, it advises when to generate, store or trade electricity across wind, solar and battery assets.

BetaKit described the product as software that manages how generators and batteries interact with the wider electrical infrastructure, lowering costs and unlocking extra power capacity for data centres. Soma claims it can deliver access to power in months rather than years, at a fraction of the cost.

Founders and traction

Ath Caramanolis is chief executive. Both articles said he created AWS's renewable energy optimisation programme, and Techcouver said he grew AWS's renewable energy portfolio to 10 gigawatts. Mario Souto is chief technology officer and built a machine learning platform at AWS that managed gigawatts of solar, wind and storage assets. Henrique Hoeltgebaum is chief AI scientist. Neither source gave a founding date or headcount.

Soma says it is optimising two gigawatts of electricity for power-producing clients and working with five data-centre customers. The company's figures were not independently verified.

The power problem

BetaKit cited S&P Global as expecting US data-centre power demand to exceed the entire power output of Texas by 2028. Soma says new generation, transmission and interconnection capacity will take five to 10 years to come online. BetaKit also noted that ThinkLabs, a Canadian-led company based in New York, raised a $28m Series A days earlier with a similar aim of helping utilities prepare grids for AI data centres.

Caramanolis said: "The answer is not simply more infrastructure, but better orchestration." He added that the team saw and solved these problems at AWS 10 years ago.

What the money is for

Soma said it will use the funds to expand its engineering and commercial teams and speed up deployments across North America. BetaKit quoted Caramanolis saying the company unlocks flexibility that already exists and accelerates time to power today.

BetaKit also quoted Caramanolis as saying: "We built the company because we knew there was a better way." The article was published on 7 April 2026 and said Soma had emerged from stealth in the preceding week.
