Arkenstone Defense, a Menlo Park company that runs back-office and compliance operations for defense technology firms, emerged from stealth on 7 July 2026 with a $35m seed round. J2 Ventures led. Susa Ventures, Granite Hill Capital Partners and Artis Ventures took part. No valuation was disclosed.

The company's announcement did not give a use of funds. Tectonic Defense, which reported the round, said the money will be used to expand the team and platform and to build a government-facing tool giving officials visibility into new companies' compliance records and security status.

What Arkenstone does

Arkenstone offers a managed platform that combines workforce operations, HR, payroll, insurance, personnel security, contracting support, compliance and accreditation. It is built around a professional employer organisation that legally employs cleared workforces. The aim is to help commercial technology companies sell to the US government.

Tectonic Defense lists two products. Foundation handles FedRAMP, authority to operate and CMMC compliance, along with contract management. Cohort manages payroll, benefits, HR and workforce operations for regulated, contract-driven environments.

The company has offices in Menlo Park, California, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and in Burr Ridge, Illinois.

Founders and team

Peter Dixon is co-founder and chief executive and William Treseder is co-founder and chief operating officer. Tectonic Defense says Dixon previously founded Second Front Systems and lists Rachel Olney, a Stanford PhD and former tech founder, among the leadership.

Tectonic reports about 60 employees, with plans to grow. While still in stealth, Arkenstone acquired Anitian, a software company that has worked in this area for more than 20 years, and its products have been integrated into the Arkenstone platform.

Customers

The company's press release says more than two dozen defense technology companies already use the platform. Tectonic Defense reports about three dozen customers. The sources do not explain the difference.

Dixon argued that defence procurement was not designed with venture-backed startups in mind, and said Arkenstone takes on the work of getting those companies ready to operate. Treseder said the aim is to set that up within months rather than years.

Treseder told Tectonic Defense: "Building a great product that serves the warfighter is not the same thing as gaining access to the defense market". The press release says Arkenstone handles workforce operations, HR, payroll, insurance, personnel security, contracting support, compliance and accreditation, so that commercial technology companies can concentrate on selling to the federal government.

Who invested

Alexander Harstrick, managing partner and co-founder of J2 Ventures, said the gap was in operational infrastructure rather than in the technology.

Treseder told Tectonic Defense: "you should be able to put all your energy into product and go-to-market". Neither source gives the sizes of the individual investments, and Arkenstone has not disclosed revenue.

The company did not disclose a founding year or revenue. Business Wire distributed the announcement on 7 July 2026, and the 01net page reproduces it.
