Cortea, a Berlin-based company that makes AI agents for audit firms, raised a €12m (about $13.9m) seed round announced on 16 June 2026. Dawn Capital led. Cherry Ventures, Mosaic Ventures and angel investors took part, among them Larry Bradley, the former global head of audit at KPMG.
The company did not disclose a valuation. It said the funding will help it bring its Audit Quality Agents to firms worldwide, and Pulse 2.0 reports that the money is earmarked for more audit agents, deeper integrations with existing audit platforms and expansion into the UK, Germany and the United States.

What Cortea does
Cortea describes itself as building the quality layer for AI-powered audits. Its first product, the Audit Quality Agents, reviews audit reports, financial statements, disclosure notes and working papers before they are signed off.
The agents cross-check figures, disclosures and documentation to flag inconsistencies, missing information, filing discrepancies and possible compliance issues. They are designed to sit alongside the systems audit firms already use and to hand their findings to auditors for review rather than make decisions themselves.
The agents were developed with leading audit firms in the UK and Europe, which the company did not name. Cortea says its technology helped review more than 4,000 audit reports in the most recent audit season, and that the agents saved auditors several days of manual review work per engagement. Both figures are the company's own.
Who invested
Dawn Capital is the lead. Dan Chaplin, a partner at Dawn, said "Now is the time to change the operating model for audit delivery", according to Pulse 2.0.
Bradley's involvement lends the company a recognisable name from the audit profession. In the announcement he wrote: "In audit and assurance, trust is everything." He added that Cortea "integrates AI into the audit process in a way that is controlled, traceable and practical".
Valentin Neumann, Cortea's co-founder and chief executive, wrote in the company's blog post: "Our mission is simple: help audit firms use AI with confidence."
Why audit quality is the pitch
Audit firms are adopting AI for tasks such as reading documents and drafting working papers, which raises the question of who checks the machine's output. Cortea positions itself as that check. It sells review rather than automation of the audit itself, and presents this as a way for firms to adopt AI without lowering quality.
The company is based in Berlin. It did not disclose its headcount, earlier funding or revenue.
What the round shows
A €12m seed is large for a company selling to a conservative profession, and the lead investor's name suggests European venture firms see audit technology as a sector with room for new vendors. Cortea has not named its customers, so how widely the agents are used beyond the pilot firms remains to be seen.
Neumann and Dawn Capital's Dan Chaplin were quoted in the coverage of the round. The company has described the agents as built with audit firms, although no firm was named.
