What the money is for

RQD* said it will expand across North America, Asia and the Middle East. It will also invest in technology and products, including digital assets and tokenisation, and strengthen its role as a custody infrastructure layer for digital assets. A further aim is to serve more financial institutions that want access to US markets.

What the executives said

Michael Sanocki, chief executive of RQD*, said: "This investment marks a significant milestone for RQD*, validating the platform we have built." FinTech Global also quoted him saying financial institutions should not have to choose between the technology and agility of a fintech.

Michael Grandfield, a partner at Bain Capital Tech Opportunities, said RQD* provides the mission-critical infrastructure that financial institutions and fintech platforms need to keep pace.

Grandfield also said, in the Pulse 2 version of the release, that the management team has done an impressive job building the company into a highly differentiated clearing and custody business.

What is not known

The sources do not give RQD*'s founding date, headcount, revenue or earlier funding. The investor list is the only information on its backing: Bain Capital joins ABN AMRO Clearing Bank, Nyca Partners, Gentree Fund and Belvedere Strategic Capital.

The round is described as a strategic growth investment, a minority stake, rather than a conventional venture round.

FinTech Global framed the deal as part of a race among clearing infrastructure providers, and noted the $74m minority stake as the main figure of the announcement.
