Orbem, a Munich deeptech company that applies AI to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), raised a €55.5m (about $65m) Series B, reported on 20 and 23 January 2026. Innovation Industries, a Dutch deeptech investor, led the round, according to Tech.eu and Munich Startup. Supernova Invest, a French venture investor, also took part.
Existing investors General Catalyst, 83North and The Venture Collective followed on, along with Possible Ventures and a group of angel investors. Orbem did not disclose a valuation.
“We are the first and currently only company in the world that enables the use of MRI in less than a second”Pedro Gómez, CEO and Co-Founder, Orbem
What Orbem does
Tech.eu said Orbem applies artificial intelligence to industrialise MRI. The company describes its platform as AI-powered and fully automated, making scanning fast and affordable enough to analyse biological material at industrial scale. Fruitnet reported that it can complete a scan in under one second without human involvement.
Its flagship product, Genus Focus, identifies poultry embryo sex non-invasively in under a second, as an alternative to culling male chicks, according to Tech.eu. A second product, Genus Scale, assesses egg fertilisation before incubation. Tech.eu reported that more than 170 million eggs have been scanned with Genus Focus, a company-reported figure.
Poultry Producer reported that Genus Scale, recently launched, checks whether eggs are fertilised before incubation so that hatcheries can avoid incubating non-viable eggs, which can then be repurposed for food. It described Orbem as a leading in-ovo sexing provider in five European countries, and said the company states it is already profitable. That claim is the company's own.
The team
Munich Startup named Pedro Gómez as chief executive and co-founder, Miguel Molina as chief technology officer and co-founder, Maria Laparidou as chief scientific officer and co-founder, and Benjamin Rauser as chief commercial officer. It did not give a headcount or founding year.
Gómez said: "We are the first and currently only company in the world that enables the use of MRI in less than a second". Munich Startup described Orbem as one of the leading in-ovo sexing providers in Europe for the poultry industry, serving hatcheries, though it named no customers.
What the money is for
Orbem plans to accelerate international expansion, particularly in the US, where it opened an office in Houston, Texas in 2025. It will also develop its AI-powered MRI technology, extend its poultry platform and build applications for produce, Munich Startup reported.
Fruitnet said the produce plans cover watermelons, avocados and mangoes, with the aim of detecting internal defects and assessing quality without cutting the fruit open. The company says this should allow more precise grading and less waste. Healthcare is a long-term goal.
Poultry Producer said the US plan is driven partly by demand linked to a new Hatch Check certification, and that Orbem is building a large biological dataset for AI models aimed at human healthcare. Gómez said in the same report: "We began by showing the poultry industry what's possible when you can see inside an egg, and we are just getting started."
Who invested
Pleuni Hooijman, an investment manager at Innovation Industries, said few companies manage to make such complex technology accessible and scalable across so many industries. Michaël Thomas, an investment director at Supernova Invest, called Orbem a visionary company that embodies European deeptech excellence.
